There is a LOT of new content on display here, including heroes in each region that help defend your civilization. Altogether, I was very pleasantly surprised by this unannounced gem of a title. The team that put it together should be very proud. They did a wonderful service to Actraiser 1990 and added a large amount of new content that not only fits the game but adds a depth to it that I never knew it could have. In ActRaiser, gameplay consists of two phases: a side-scrolling action platformer where you fight monsters with swordsmanship and magic, and a city-building phase where you must manage development of your burgeoning society. As you progress through the city-builder, you level up, increasing your powers in both modes.

Game System

Realm Acts: Strategically cast powerful fire, ice, and other magic in these 2D action stages. Humans return to reclaim the realm after you conquer these stages, allowing you to begin cultivating your settlements. New magic that was not available in the original game has been added along with the ability to dodge. Players can also attack with upward and downward motions for a more dynamic action experience. You will need every new trick in your arsenal to defeat stronger bosses at the end of the new action stages. Realm Management: Help humanity flourish by cultivating your settlements and offering guidance. Use your miraculous powers to summon lightning and trigger earthquakes to remove obstacles such as trees and boulders that impede the growth of your chosen. Love Season

Play as the Lord of Light’s angel and use your mighty bow and arrows to drive back the evil monsters that prey on your people. Protect your settlements from enemy raids in real-time strategic battles. The placement of your forts and timing of your miracles is key to achieving victory in these engagements. Experience all-new tales of humanity’s struggles to overcome their flaws and failings as they learn to love one another and together grow stronger. Altogether, these new scenarios amount to more than twice the story present in the original. Explore the vast new realm and enjoy building your settlements for longer than ever before! The original Actraiser composer, Yuzo Koshiro, has re-arranged all of the iconic original tracks and added 15 new tracks as well.

Gameplay

Side scrolling levels are remade and expanded while retaining the feel of the original, music is redone and redone well with longer tracks from the original artist so they fit right in. The city building sim mode got the most attention. In addition to the original game’s features, cities now get raided by monster hordes from time to time that require tower defense elements to come into play. Most of the defense comes from forts and towers you build, the Angel that shoots flying monsters normally cant intervene, but you do have a hero human you can move around the board to handle groups of monsters head on. You can use your miracles to throw lightning and the like on creeps but there is a cooldown on them and high MP costs so they are not effective as a primary defense. Summer of ’58

more of a last ditch effort thing. Outside of raids, when sealing a monster lair you play a more active role. Instead of just watching your townies seal it themselves like in the original, you go down and play a quick little action stage to seal the deal. I would have preferred a little more to these stages, perhaps a puzzle to solve in addition to monsters to fight, but as a source of variety they get the job done. The game as a whole seems like it will be significantly longer, Actraiser Renaissance is a must play for any fan of the original. Way more than just a visual upgrade, this is in many ways a new game built upon the foundation of this classic from the SNES era. While it covers all of the original story beats and gameplay, it expands upon them with new characters and heroes, who are utilized in defense of raids that attack each of your settlements.

Steam Review

A wonderful remake of the SNES classic. first play and am absolutely engaged with this charming remake. They really have done an incredible job of bringing the classic back with a modern take. Keep in mind, this is basically a straightforward remake of the original that is very faithful to the core mechanics. If you’re looking for something super complicated, this isn’t it…but for fans of the original Actraiser, it’s a very enjoyable game and worth the buy. There are several useful additions to the original mechanics. The graphics are a welcome upgrade and have some great effects. The action graphics are a bit blocky but I see what they were going for. It works for me…and they’ve added some very cool effects to everything to include the character, backgrounds and magic effects. The Addams Family: Mansion Mayhem

the backgrounds in the scrolling portions. The town building portions look great and are quite well done. I love watching the little characters run around. I enjoyed the town building and especially the sieges which actually have some depth in how you lay down your defenses. It’s not Civ but it updates the original’s gameplay without getting too complicated. In addition, the character art is really good and varied for each town. Of special note is the incredible soundtrack which was always ripping…the action track is pure nostalgia with an updated sound. Good stuff and if you don’t dig it, then you can switch the the SNES OG soundtrack in the menu. I’d have to say thus far that it’s worth the price for anyone who was a fan of the original.
