BERSERK and the Band of the Hawk Free Download Growing up, I was fortunate to have the “cool older cousin;” that relative who is just a little older than you, so they had access to all the cool “older kid” stuff you knew you weren’t supposed to see, and unlike a sibling, they were outside the realm of responsibility, meaning they could get away with showing it to you. They are the reason I knew about stuff like Spawn, Heavy Metal and most notably Berserk. Berserk was the first manga I ever got into, and thanks to my cool older cousin I was able to read far past where the series was in the West. At the time, my love for anime was blossoming, but I had only known of the few the mainstream animes that ran on cable TV. I was captivated by its perversely dark atmosphere, incredibly tragic storylines, and beautifully detailed artwork. Repacklab.com sexy games

And while my love of the franchise ran deep, I unfortunately missed out on the series foray into the video game world. Sword of the Berserk: Gut’s Rage released on the Dreamcast in 1999, ensuring very few actually played it, and Berserk: Millennium Falcon Hen Seima Senki no Shō or Berserk Millennium Empire Arc: Chapter of the Holy Demon War released on PS2 in 2004 but only in Japan. It seemed as though I’d never be able to experience my favourite manga in my favourite medium, until Koei Tecmo announced Berserk and the Band of the Hawk, a perfect pairing of the brutal and bloody manga to their signature Warriors gameplay.

BERSERK – Additional Warhorse Set

I am an unapologetic lover of the Warriors franchise. I love the simple yet nuanced combat, I love the ridiculous fun of hacking hundreds upon hundreds of enemies to bits, and I love how each game manages to feel different while essentially being the same. I think something like Berserk lends itself perfectly to this style of gameplay, being mostly centered around large scale wars and cutting through legions of demons. While players will spend the majority of the game as series protagonist Guts, characters such as Griffith, Judeau, Casca and even Zodd the Immortal can be unlocked and each feel distinctly different from each other with distinct attack styles and combos. Berserk and the Band of the Hawk does an admirable job retelling the manga almost in it’s entirety, starting at the Golden Age Arc, and ending at the Hawk of the Millennium Empire Arc through a combination of in-game events and cutscenes that blend clips from the 1997 anime, the 2016 OVA, and new cutscenes made specifically for the game. It’s a parsed version, and while newcomers may feel like certain pieces of the plot are missing, long-time fans are sure to appreciate the amount of effort put into telling the complete Berserk story. While fans may worry that the series’ tone has been sacrificed for over-the-top nature of the Warriors franchise, rest assured it has been not. Berserk and the Band of the Hawk is the bloodiest Warriors game to ever exist, with splashes of blood from enemies drenching the battlefield as well as characters; and while enemies don’t split in half with every sword swing, they do explode into bits from character’s frenzy attacks maintaining the perfect level of gore and silliness for a Berserk flavored Warriors game.

There have been plenty of great adaptations of the Musou formula of various licensed franchises. Gundam and the first Fist of the North Star were fun, as was One Piece. The anime IPs worked well, but developer Omega Force showed them up with the quality of their Musou take on game specific IPs like Dragon Quest Heroes and Hyrule Warriors. Even dismissing the licensed products, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms based Dynasty Warriors 2 kicked it all off, and gives the loyal ample of reasons to return. The fact of the matter is that the series, as ridiculously prolific as it is, has plenty of different quality entries for all sorts of varying tastes. That is why the following statement should be taken as salient as intended: barring one glaring omission, Berserk and the Band of the Hawk is the best of the Musou games. WARIOWARE: GET IT TOGETHER! The game takes its name from the focus of the Golden Age arc of the anime, a trilogy of movies that chronicles the life of protagonist, Guts, before he became the antihero star of the long running manga and anime series, though it does continue the narrative after the events of those films. When it starts out, Guts is a wandering mercenary who is only in it for the violence and the cash. Even young and relatively inexperienced, he is as much of a force on the battlefield as he is a douche in his personal interactions. Still, the potential he shows in battle catches the eye of Griffith, leader of the Band of the Hawk, who conscripts Guts into service at sword point. This might not seem like a particularly unique set up but, as anyone who has seen the Golden Age Arc can attest, it is a story with real depth, with believable character growth, well made action scenes, and one of the most heart wrenching final acts in to be put to screen.

There is a reason that the anime is spoken so much in the review for the game: Omega Force has made ample use of the source material to fill in for the cutscenes. This comes across as a copout budget cutting method initially, as they are only using previously created work to tell their narrative. The developer does create some CGI recreations of some sequences though, as well as fill in additional dialogue that was not in the source material, giving characters like Pippin and Judeau a bit more personality. For the most part, this works to create the most coherent and driving narrative that the Musou games have seen, with the exception of one edit to the movie that made no sense. The best comparison to Berserk to make for those not so inclined toward the manga medium is Game of Thrones. Both are dense, complicated, decades long stories about the truly dark and unforgiving nature of man, beast, and fate, in a fantasy setting tinged in blood and sadness. Both series also share a common trait in that they are decades-long stories with no end in sight, that struggle to be adapted into other mediums accurately due to the sheer volume of narrative content. For the 30 or so years that Berserk has been running, only two other video games based on it have been made, one of which never found life outside of Japan. With Berserk and the Band of the Hawk, Koei Tecmo finally spreads Berserk fever across the globe in the video game medium, and it’s a fever you definitely don’t want treated. Drift King
