Scavenge for scraps to make a small return of investment, or become a baron of the open road and smuggle contraband under the eyes of border patrols to make a sizable profit. Developer Greg Pryjmachuk worked on the Formula 1 franchise from 2009 through to 2014. In late 2014, Greg began work on this new driving simulation featuring the fictional Laika 601 Deluxe car; reminiscent of the East German “Trabbie”, it will need much love and care to keep it going on this memorable road trip! Jalopy is a simulation video game developed by English indie studio MinskWorks and published by Excalibur Games. The game follows two characters, the player and their uncle, who attempt to build a Laika (a car modelled after the Trabant 601) from individual parts and drive from East Berlin to Turkey using it.

Jalopy Premise & Plot

The game follows the player character known only as Splat and his Uncle Lütfi, two Germans of Turkish descent from Eastern Berlin who have decided to go on a road trip to Istanbul since the Iron Curtain fell. The main task of the game is to get to Istanbul to drop the Uncle off all the while maintaining the Laika (heavily based on the Trabant 601) which is prone to frequent breakdowns signified by smoke coming from the sides of the bonnet. The player passes through East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Turkey on his trip with his uncle. The cities he stops in all contain shops important to maintaining his car, and to sell objects found in discarded boxes strewn across the roads on his trip. The player may choose to upgrade the Laika if he has enough money. When the uncle falls asleep in the hotel. Car Mechanic Simulator 2021

the player can open his briefcase and collect notes that put together a backstory. It turns out the player and the uncle have been separated from the rest of their family residing in West Berlin for almost 30 years because the Uncle was with him as a baby on the East Side the night the Berlin Wall was erected on August 12, 1961. The uncle has been keeping in contact with the rest of the family, especially his mother, while he kept everything oblivious to him those 30 years. Both of the parents died before the Berlin Wall was torn down, and the mother’s last wish was for her husband’s ashes to be scattered across the Bosporus when they arrive in Istanbul (which is the reason why Uncle talked his nephew in on going on this seemingly random road trip). After he drops him off in Istanbul, he is never seen again.

As a Player

As a player, you’re limited to what you can carry in your hands at any given time, and you’re limited to what you can bring in the trunk of your car. You can usually fit the necessities – an extra fuel can or two, a repair kit, some water for coolant and some oil – but what about that box you found at the side of the road filled with coffee. You could dump a fuel can to make room and sell it for profit, but what happens if you run out of gas… The intro story is farily basic at this point – you and your uncle go on a road trip from old Eastern Bloc Berlin. Really though, the provided story simply acts as a launch point for a player run story. You look back at experiences you have on this trip as the things that really stick out in your mind, like the time your car ran out of fuel under an overpass on the Autobahn. My Summer Car

and you had to walk 10 minutes in the pouring rain and pitch black to the nearest gas station to get a fuel can. And let’s talk about the atmosphere for a moment – the graphics are heavily stylized, very dark and simple which only seem to add to the game’s charm. There’s nothing more cozy than being in your car as the rain pelts down outside, muffled slightly thanks to the excellent audio design work. The cheap motels you stop off at in each town and dark, almost too dark but then you’re not really there to sight-see; you’re there to catch a few hours of sleep before hitting the road once more. the car is you – that is to say you play a human driving the car and you can get out and sleep in Motels, or purchase coffee in gas stations, but really the car is your identity. It starts out very basic with a cheap engine.

Steam Review

Really interesting concept for a game. Think of it as a cross between a Truck Simulator game and a Survival game. You are tasked with making it to the border in your Jalopy (a beat up car), You start off having to fix up your car. Adding a passenger door, all engine parts and wheels etc. What I love about this game is the attention to detail. eg. you have to pop the bonnet by pulling the handle under the steering wheel. Any car owner will be aware of this, but this is the first time I’ve ever had to do this in a game. There are lots of different attention to detail style mechanics. These types of mechanics include adding oil to your fuel mix. The more oil you add the less wear and tear your engine will take. The less oil you add the better your engine will perform. Its a nice mechanic and there are many more similar details to explore and tweak with your engine/car setup. City Car Driving

The gameplay of jalopy is one of the most curious aspect ..it presents itself in a very simple way that will allow anyone to pick up the game very easily and then goes to brutally hide the hard parts for the players to discover later. Installing parts on the car is easy but maintaining them involves a lot of hard labor , driving controls are simple but the car handling is terrible. The atmosphere looks lovely but has a ton of stuff hidden in them which means you have to keep a sharp lookout for stuff. The last part is the money , at first it would easy to earn money selling of stuff you find but then there is a whole economy out there where you earn profit or loss depending on the situations in the area. Almost everything is randomized you could easily have a ton of money in one moment and loose it all in the next.
