The Plane Effect’s world blends the ordinary and the surreal as players go from driving down sterile city streets to swimming beneath the ocean to slithering through narrow underground tunnels. You’ll also encounter laser-shooting robots – no one said getting back to your family would be easy. Gameplay largely consists of puzzle-solving, but those who would rather enjoy the story and atmosphere can turn to an assist option to breeze through riddles faster. Curious to see more? The art and world-building are excellent, and I’m telling you, if you enjoyed Inside, I think you’ll enjoy The Plane Effect for how it gradually builds the world and opens you up to what is really happening. The coloration even is very similar, with a monochrome focus, but there are splashes of color here and there to spice things up. Even the character animations seem haunting, almost Slenderman-esque with how our emaciated protagonist jaunts around. The story takes some weird sci-fi turns, and after almost 3 hours, I have an idea of what’s going on, and only the faintest guess as to how it will end. TL;DR-After 3 hours, I am invested in the story and dying to find out the rest. But, the clunky gameplay and proliferation of bugs early on got me a little frustrated.

A sinister presence follows

I’m not a fan of horror games, but I do like being a little creeped out. “Inside” was one of the first indie games I ever played, and it made me feel…weird. Games like that, and now The Plane Effect, I put in the horror adjacent genre, because while you’re not actively running from a serial killer or trying to survive a night in a haunted mansion, there is a special kind of spook factor that comes from cautiously exploring the bleak and lonely environments, and that feeling that someone is always watching you. I have not yet finished the game, I’m about 3 hours in, but I wanted to give a quick review of the game so far, and my first impressions. The story here starts with a montage of our main man, who smiles way more than any person should, to the point where I started to wonder if he is the serial killer. Bully: Scholarship Edition

But, despite being the happiest man alive, his life takes a dark turn when he picks up a seemingly harmless paper airplane. He is now all alone in his office, looking for photographs, clues, and objects that he can use to find his way out of the locked building. And the game progresses in that manner for the rest of the time. You’ll come across some memory games here and there, or environmental puzzles, but for the most part, this is a Clue-type game where you need to find the correct items in the correct order to advance. There are usually subtle direction cues around each location, but you will learn a lot from trial-and-error (and dying). The troublesome part is, there were a few bugs in my short playtime that were a bit frustrating, partially because I did not know they were bugs, and secondly because you need to do a soft reset for them by going out to the main menu and then re-entering the game.

A sinister presence follows

Thankfully, this does not set you back in your progress, it’s just a bit time consuming, and you’re never quite sure if it was a bug until you reload the game and see the problem has been solved. For instance, there is a short surfing sequence, but the first time I completed it, the game didn’t register and I just kept going, and then eventually free-falling for a minute or two. I did think it strange that this continued for so long, but there was also an earlier segment that went on for longer than I anticipated. There were a few other kinks that I had to work around, but overall the game is pretty well put-together. The movement feels like it could be polished up a bit, as the character feels a bit sluggish, even when running, which you can do on the controller by holding right bumper. Broforce

If you’re playing in either of the game modes that provide hints, you can trigger these by pressing left bumper. I started using this mode after about an hour and a half, when I was completely stumped as to what to do next. I just kept walking around this large room, walking up to every single item and trying to interact with it to no avail, so finally, I caved to the hints. And then I really started progressing more quickly and honestly enjoying the development of the story, since it didn’t feel so segmented, but I noticed that I lost interest in the environments and the subtle nuances of them. It’s a choice you’ll have to make, but one I don’t really regret, especially when the areas opened up without walls to act as borders. Battlefield Bad Company 2
