A remastered and revamped Nine Hours The well-received classic Nintendo DS game 999 has been updated with hi-res graphics and a variety of new features including both Japanese and English voice acting! Seek a way out Search for clues within numerous locked rooms and solve mind-bending puzzles in order to escape. VLR even has two difficulty settings for more of a challenge. Fascinating theories and pseudo science ideas abound along the twisting, turning journey to uncover who Zero is, why everyone was kidnapped, and the shocking connection between the Nonary Games. The game’s genre is a mix of psychological horror, mystery, suspense, thriller, and science fiction, with slight elements of humor and comedy to fill in the gaps when the atmosphere isn’t so dark.

true ending

First off, in order to see the game’s true ending, players had to play through the same puzzles multiple times, and re-read dialogue they had already seen before. This monotony was troublesome on its own, but when paired with the slowest text speed imaginable, it became insufferable for some. 999 was its own worst enemy, as all of its problems were brought on by sloppy design choices. All of these issues were fixed in its sequel, Virtue’s Last Reward, as a flow chart was added to remove players having to play the same sequences repeatedly, and players no longer had to wait for text to crawl across the screen at a snail’s pace. It was a massive improvement at the time, and now 999 is getting these improvements in a collection of both titles called Zero Escape: The Nonary Games. The Smurfs: Mission Vileaf

Both games feature multiple endings. While most lead to what would be considered a “bad” ending, there is always one that is the “true” ending that takes some fineness to acquire. Both games are designed to be played multiple times both for the different endings as well as more back story. Each decision and path the player takes will offer up more conversations and events with different people in the Nonary Game. The biggest addition to this bundle is the fact that 999 is fully voice acted. All dialog for the most part has voice acting associated with it. Both English and Japanese voices can be selected. While it is a nice feature, I found that a few of the chosen actors portraying certain people felt off in 999. Some deliveries felt forced at times, but that just comes with the territory.

999: Remastered

The big draw of The Nonary Games is that 999 is finally getting the updated version it always needed. This remastered version plays nearly identical to the DS original, but there’s some smart changes that make it a far better experience. The most noticeable difference off the bat is that voice acting is now added. Every character from series protagonist Junpei (who keeps his previous voice actor from Zero Time Dilemma) to lovable goofball Seven now has a voice, and the performances are all really great. The voice acting isn’t without some minor issues, though, as not all of the in-game text gets fully voiced, and Junpei’s voice direction seems unchanged from the final game in the trilogy (so he sounds a bit too jaded here). Minor qualms aside, it’s a great addition that helps such a text heavy game. The other big addition is the addition of a flow chart, which eliminates the need for multiple playthroughs. Unfortunately, some puzzles will still have to be solved twice, but this addition knocks a substantial amount of time spent retreading ground off the length of 999. It’s worth noting that using the flow chart can be a bit confusing compared to the more straightforward one found in Virtue’s Last Reward, as players have to chart a path in it rather than just select the part they want to go through (this being due to how the original game was setup, and how the story differs due to past decisions).

The story

The story presented in both games is almost like a cross between Saw and a mystery novel. People find themselves kidnapped with a bracelet on their wrist. They are forced to play this “Nonary Game” by their kidnapper, Zero. If they can escape their puzzle-ridden rooms and not end up killing each other, they can go free, but of course, it’s never that simple. In 999, characters are assigned a number by their bracelet that allows them to only go through certain doors in groups. Failing to go by the rules will result in a bomb going off that was implanted in their stomachs. In Virtue’s Last Reward, characters are forced to choose to either ally or betray the other participants in the game. Depending on what the other person does, they will either gain points or lose them. City of Gangsters

If they reach 0 points, they die. If they reach 9 points they can escape. To say the least, these story beats are tense, dramatic, and well thought out. In the end, The Nonary Games is a fantastic bundle with games that are both fun to play and very entertaining in the story department. Any fan of puzzles games and visual novels should pick this bundle up without a doubt. Even people looking for a great story should give this a look. It has the makings of a good “starter” visual novel. I can’t suggest it enough. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go play Zero Time Dilemma. Both games feature individually adjusting the volume of (or disabling entirely) voices, sound effects and background music. If the player chooses to disable voices, in both games, there are no voice beeps outside.
